About Covenant

At Covenant, we believe that spiritual life is nourished at church and lived out in the world. We recognize God’s love in our lives. Covenant is where we bring our desire to grow and learn and worship. Then we go back out into the world with that love guiding what we do and how we do it. Being the church (not just “going to church”) means connecting to God and connecting to the world.

Mission and Vision

Mission

Covenant Presbyterian Church is a dynamic congregation led by Christ, inspired by the word, active in the World, open to the future.

Vision

Covenant Presbyterian Church glorifies God and builds relationships with Christ and each other through—

  • worship that inspires
  • education that challenges
  • nurture that embraces
  • fellowship that energizes
  • ministry that responds

Our History

On September 27, 1953, 13 people attended the first worship service of the future Covenant Presbyterian Church. The service was held at the Lane Avenue Theater, once a part of Lane Avenue Shopping Center. As the congregation grew, services were moved to Tremont Elementary School. That same year, the National Missions committee of the Presbytery purchased 11 lots at the corner of Redding and Ridgecliff Roads to serve as the site for the future building.

In January 1954, plans were made for the formal organization of the church under the name of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Sixty-one members signed the charter. The church was chartered on January 31, 1954 at the Northminster Presbyterian Church. Two years later, the first phase of the building, including the original sanctuary and the portion along Ridgecliff Road, was completed. In 1959, the need to expand created the upstairs Christian education wing. As growth continued, plans were made for the sanctuary, fellowship hall, library-lounge, and kitchen. In February 1964, construction was finished and the dedication was held. In 1988, a major renovation was completed, and the Christmas Eve services unveiled the current sanctuary and other improvements and modifications. Throughout its history, Covenant’s mission has been supported by an active and energetic congregation, and that is true today.
