Ministry of the Board of Deacons
Our Deacons participate in a ministry of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. They promote a ministry of caring within Covenant and respond to food, shelter, and other needs of people in the Covenant congregation and in the community at large. Each Deacon is assigned a zone; every Covenant member is part of a Deacon zone. Each Deacon is responsible for keeping in contact with and caring for his/her zone members.
Pastoral Staff Leader
Rev. Jim Mehler, Parish Associate
Bereavement
The Bereavement Ministry Team is responsible for contacting the appropriate Deacon when a member (or relative or guest) has passed away. This allows the Deacon to contact the family in an appropriate way to offer the Church’s condolences and offer any other appropriate help.
Bloodmobile
Twice yearly, the Red Cross Bloodmobile comes to Covenant.
Deacons’ Blood Drive, Monday, March 26, 1-6pm, Fellowship Hall. Signup sheets will be available between church services several weeks prior to the Blood Drive. Let’s try to challenge ourselves and surpass our goal in March. Contact Jay McLean, 209-7314, jmclean001@columbus.rr.com, or Becky Miller, ramdvm4511@yahoo.com.
Covenant’s Automobile Ride Expediting Service (C.A.R.E.S.)
C.A.R.E.S. provides transportation to those who need rides to doctor/dentist appointments, church services, other activities, or for necessary errands.
Clothing
There is a clothing box inside the north entrance to the church. The Deacons on this ministry team take the clothing to the West Second Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Communion
The Communion Ministry team prepares the sanctuary, bread, and juice for Communion.
Friendly Visitors
Friendly Visitors are people who share their time and their life with an older Covenant member, either by visiting or calling on a regular basis. The Friendly Visitor reaches out to the person with whom they are paired, spending time in conversation, watching television, or reading to their friend. Contact Jim Mehler.
Greeters
It is the Deacons who find and schedule volunteers to greet members and visitors for each Sunday worship service. Greeters are stationed at each of the main entry doors.
Hospital Chain
When a member of the congregation enters the hospital, this ministry team contacts the Deacon for that member’s zone.
Hunger Task Force
The Hunger Task Force is responsible for getting our congregation involved in such activities as the Crop Walk and other awareness programs.
Meal Chain
Sometimes a hot meal is the best way to show we care. The Meal Chain can provide meals for members upon the birth of a child, death of a family member, or a time of crisis.
Prayer Chain
The Prayer Chain provides a quiet, but effective source of support and inspiration for those in need or for specific concerns. The assigned deacon oversees and coordinates the prayer chain.
Youth Deacons
In addition to adult Deacons, Covenant also commissions two youth Deacons.
Deacons’ Adopt-A-Family Christmas-time Ministry
Form groups and adopt a less fortunate family. Margaret Watson, a social worker who has assisted us for many years, and the Salvation Army will provide families and gift-wishes. (The Salvation Army requests that gifts be unwrapped.) Let us know if interested so we know how many families we can serve. The Deacons will contribute a Kroger gift card to families. You can also write a check to Covenant, marking it Adopt-A-Family. For info, to sign up, or to help shop, wrap, or deliver gifts, contact Jay McLean, home 457-9177, cell 209-7314; or Ed Chung home 459-9011, cell 638-2965.
