Lenten Devotions

Wednesday, February 20

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.
1 Peter 4:10

What gifts has God given you? Go ahead, make a list. Put down your talents, your qualities that people seem to count upon, your resources, your knowledge and wisdom. Are you using these things for God? Are you using these things to go out into the world loving others and making disciples? What one step can you take today to become a more faithful steward of the manifold gifts of God?

Some Ideas for Practice:

  1. Send one card of appreciation or encouragement to someone each day of Lent.
  2. Change the light bulbs in your house to the more energy efficient kind.
  3. Pray with your children each night before bed.
  4. Read a Bible story, any version, to your child (or another child you love) each day.
  5. Study the Lord’s Prayer a phrase at a time and mean it when you say it.
  6. Begin recycling, one kind of item at a time, gradually increasing.
  7. Seek the advice and prayers of friends and wise people to help you identify your gifts and calling.
  8. Eat fewer meat-based meals in order to use fewer of the world’s resources.
  9. Eat more locally or seasonally produced foods to use fewer of the world’s resources.
  10. Educate yourself about a particular area of the world and its needs. Pray for these people.

A reminder: Don’t forget to come hear Linda Gabel in our Preacher from the Pew series tonight at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary.
