Lenten Devotions
Saturday, March 1
To you, O LORD, I call; my rock, do not refuse to hear me, for if you are silent to me, I shall be like those who go down to the Pit. Hear the voice of my supplication, as I cry to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.
Psalm 28: 1-2
No matter how much we know that God always hears us, that God is always present, sometimes we find ourselves feeling as it God is far away. And, maybe, the truth is that we do not always know and believe that God is close. It can be so very hard to keep our sense of being in God, surrounded and suffused with God, alive.
So, we pray. We cry out. We beg our God to come near.
What words will you use? Father, help me. Lord of the Universe, find me. Holy One, be with me. Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Holy Spirit, give me breath. Gentle mother, wrap your arms around me. Living Water, I am thirsty.
Sometimes, all we can do is find the phrase that feels right and repeat it. Rock ourselves in our arms and repeat it. Help, Lord, help. For, Lord, to whom shall we go. You have the words of eternal life. You have the words that give us life and breath and hope and love. Help, Lord, help. Amen.
A Spiritual Practice
Allow yourself time to dabble in the psalms, the prayer book of God’s people that we have used and shared and sung for hundreds and hundreds of years. Whatever you are feeling, you will find words to express it hear, images to help you reach out to the Holy One, to have the courage to tell God exactly what it is you feel and need and hope. Allow yourself to find the Word of God in and through these words.
